How to Make Yourself Approachable 😏

I have a little problem with this. I always seem to have to fight to fit in or assimilate with others. And after the initial “trial” period, I usually receive feedback from my now “friend” that sounds like, ” I thought you were stuck-up” or ” You acted like you were better than everyone”. These remarks don’t take me by surprise anymore. (I’ve been hearing this since middle school) But when I am in a situation where I don’t get a second/third impression, I have to connect on any/every level possible.

In school or at work I always had more than one chance to get to know someone and the verse is true for them getting to know me. There was no time constraints, I usually am the one who has to start the conversations which has made me a guru at small talk; the weather rarely changes in South Florida so I needed more creative questions.
Job interviews are the worst though. How am I expected to captivate and charm the interviewer when I suck at first impressions and I’m nervous?!  Well let me tell you how.

What to do

Smile!.. A lot and don’t stop smiling. Smiling is inviting so when you make eye contact with anyone make sure you smile. Also when you are talking, smile then too. It makes you sound excited, full of life, and bubbly, even if your not. (which you are probably not if you are looking for a job in this economy.)

Dress to impress! Make sure you are wearing your professional attire and its not wearing you. What does that mean? Act your age when going to interviews, I know “adult suits” can be plain, un-colorful, and not tailored to your body so jazz things up. Wear a fitted blouse under the blazer, belt the blazer, or wear the suit as separates. And add your funky jewelry or colorful nail polish in to show your personality. Especially if you are rocking a bald head like I currently am.

Lastly, be positive! Google some questions that interviewers may ask and practice answering these questions in a positive way. This will also give you the confidence to believe in what you are saying. I usually practice my answers in front of the mirror. (Okay, I am a little stuck-up)

Give yourself a fighting chance by applying these tips and wow your interviewer (or whoever) right of the bat.
